How to Plan the Perfect Picnic

How to plan the perfect picnic

One of the most enjoyable ways to eat out during summer, you can take a picnic almost anywhere. Whether you’re visiting the park, the beach, going on a bike ride or simply staying at home, we're here to make sure you’re picnic ready for every sunny adventure.

Choose a location for your picnic

As we mentioned, the wonderful thing about a picnic is that it can be enjoyed in a number of different settings. A perfectly packed picnic can turn a humble day out to your local park into an event, will brighten up a long car journey, and give you more time for sunbathing when enjoying a day out at the beach. The first step to any picnic prep is knowing where you are headed, but if you are feeling spontaneous and without a set plan, even better. All you need is your picnic set up, a patch of grass or picnic table and you’re all set.

Pack the essentials for a picnic

- Picnic blanket
- Picnic basket cool bag
- Storage containers
- Crockery
- Cutlery
- Napkins
- Picnic food
- Drink
- Cleaning essentials

Some of your picnic necessities will depend on where you’re setting up. For example, if there is a picnic bench available you won’t need a picnic blanket. However, if you’re not sure of your surroundings it’s always best to have everything on hand just in case. If you’re making a day of it, we also recommend packing some games, such as cards, travel board games or a ball to keep everyone entertained.

Create a delicious menu

The key to picnic food is variety. Sandwiches, chicken drumsticks, corn on the cobs and anything on a skewer are perfect for a picnic spread as they are easy to pick up and eat with your hands. Tubs of salads, whether green, grain, pasta or fruit are wonderful options, allowing everyone to tuck in as they wish. Dressings can be made up ahead and transported in small jars to add when you’re ready to eat. Crisps, crackers, olives, cheese and continental meats are also a great way to pad out a picnic and ensure there are plenty of options for grazing throughout the afternoon.

When it comes to drinks, having water to hand is an essential. Pack something fruity and fizzy for a more celebratory feel, cartons of juice are perfect for avoiding spillages, and ready-mixed cocktails or mocktails adds a fun twist to a grown-up picnic set up.

Picnic tips and tricks

- Made for carrying picnics and keeping your prepped food cool, for a truly successful picnic a picnic basket, bag or cooler is a must. You’ll want to keep your picnic as fuss free as possible, and having proper storage for your set-up will help towards this.
- Prep your food in advance, packing it into storage tubs and containers. This will not only make packing more manageable, but it will also help to avoid any spillages before you arrive at your destination.
- If you’re setting up a picnic at home, using your everyday tableware is an option, but to travel light and to minimise breakages when out and about, use melamine or enamel crockery instead.
- Remember to take rubbish bags and cleaning essentials, such as hand sanitiser, wipes and napkins.
- If you are setting up your picnic at home, take advantage of any home comforts - make your seating area extra comfy with cushions and an array of blankets.
