Made with Love: Summer Moments to Savour

Made with Love: Summer Moments to Savour

Summer is made up of the moments we look forward to all year: breakfast in the garden, long lunches outside, spontaneous drinks with friends and dinners that stretch into the evening. With a little thought, even the simplest gathering can become something to remember.

As part of our Made with Love campaign, we're celebrating the care that goes into bringing people together – from preparing something delicious to setting the table and making time to enjoy it. Because the moments that stay with us aren't always the most elaborate. Often, they're the everyday rituals made special by good food, beautiful surroundings and the people we share them with.

Here are some of our favourite ways to make the most of summer at home.

1. Breakfast in the Garden

Sometimes the best summer moments begin before the day has really started, with coffee, something fresh to eat and a quiet table outside. When the weather allows, take breakfast into the garden and enjoy the simple pleasure of starting the day in the sunshine.

Keep things relaxed with fresh fruit, pastries, toast and preserves or yoghurt with granola. A tray makes it easy to carry everything outside, while mugs, small plates and a jug of juice can make even a simple breakfast feel a little more considered.

Add a few freshly picked flowers and linen napkins for a finishing touch, then settle in and take your time. There's no need for a full brunch spread – sometimes a favourite mug, something good to eat and a sunny spot are all you need.

2. A Long Al Fresco Lunch

A summer lunch doesn't need to be complicated. A few dishes placed in the centre of the table, something cold to drink and nowhere else to be can be enough. Build your lunch around food that's made for sharing, from colourful seasonal salads and fresh bread to quiches, tarts, grilled vegetables or simple antipasti. Serve everything in generous bowls and platters so everyone can help themselves, creating a table that feels abundant without being overly formal.

For the setting, mix complementary tableware with lightweight linen and a few sprigs of herbs or flowers from the garden. A water jug or carafe on the table keeps everything within easy reach, leaving you free to enjoy the food and conversation.

The best part? There's no need to rush. Let lunch stretch into the afternoon and see where the conversation takes you.

3. An Afternoon Tea in the Sunshine

Afternoon tea has a natural place in summer. Whether you're celebrating a birthday, catching up with friends or simply making the most of a sunny weekend, it's an easy excuse to gather around the for something sweet.

Keep it relaxed with freshly baked scones, strawberries, small cakes and a selection of finger sandwiches, accompanied by a pot of your favourite tea. For warmer days, you could add a jug of homemade lemonade or an elderflower drink to keep things refreshing.

A cake stand brings a sense of occasion to the table, while small plates, teacups and serving pieces make it easy for everyone to help themselves. Add a few fresh flowers and take the whole setting outside for an afternoon that feels special without needing to be overly formal.

After all, sometimes the best reason for afternoon tea is simply having a little more time to spend together.

4. A Picnic Close to Home

You don't need to travel far for a picnic to feel like an occasion. A blanket in the garden, local park or a favourite spot nearby can be enough to change the pace of the afternoon.

Keep the food simple and easy to share: sandwiches or filled rolls, fresh fruit, salad pots, small cakes and something cool to drink. Pack a few favourite pieces alongside the essentials, choosing practical serveware that's easy to carry and set down when you're ready to eat.

For a garden picnic, there's even less preparation involved. Add cushions for comfort, lay everything out on a blanket and let everyone help themselves. It's a reminder that summer memories don't always require a big plan. Sometimes, changing where you eat is enough to make an ordinary afternoon feel different.

5. Drinks in the Late Afternoon

As the afternoon begins to cool, there's something lovely about gathering for a drink before dinner. It can be completely spontaneous – invite friends to stay a little longer, mix a few drinks and bring out some snacks.

Keep things easy with sparkling water, cocktails or mocktails, perhaps with fresh fruit or herbs for a summery touch. Add bowls of olives, nuts, crisps or small cheese and charcuterie-style bites so there's something to nibble on without turning it into a full meal.

A tray makes serving effortless, while jugs, glassware and small bowls can create a relaxed drinks station that guests can help themselves to. As the light begins to soften, add a few candles or lanterns and let the setting do the rest.

6. A Late-Night Summer Supper

There is something different about a summer dinner that starts late and ends even later, when the table is lit by candles and nobody is watching the clock.

As the day cools, bring everyone together for a relaxed supper of pasta, grilled vegetables, fish, sharing salads and plenty of fresh bread. Keep dishes in the centre of the table so everyone can help themselves, creating a more intimate, family-style setting.

This is where tableware can help set the mood. Layer plates and bowls with lightweight linen, add a low arrangement of flowers or greenery and place candles between the serving dishes. A carafe or jug on the table keeps drinks close by, while beautiful serving pieces make even a simple meal feel thoughtfully prepared.

7. The Spontaneous Supper

The best gatherings aren't always the ones planned weeks in advance. Sometimes someone stays for dinner, friends drop by or a conversation turns into an invitation to eat.

These are the moments when you make use of what's already in the kitchen. Put together a quick pasta, open some bread and dips, dress a salad or turn leftovers into a meal to share. Even pizza, followed by fruit and ice cream, can feel like an occasion when it's served around a table with people you enjoy being with.

Don't worry about matching everything perfectly or creating a formal setting. A few serving dishes, favourite plates and glasses are enough to turn an unplanned meal into something that feels intentional.

Because made with love doesn't have to mean complicated. It can simply mean making room for someone at your table.

8. A Summer Celebration at Home

Summer gives even the smallest celebration a sense of occasion, whether it's a birthday lunch, anniversary dinner, graduation or simply a reason to gather everyone together.

Start with a favourite meal and build the setting around it. A celebration cake can become the centrepiece, while flowers, candles and a special serving dish add those little details that make the occasion feel different from an everyday meal.

This is a chance to bring out the pieces you love most, whether that's a statement platter, a beautiful cake stand or tableware in a favourite colour or pattern. Place cards can add a personal touch, but they're certainly not essential – the aim is to make the table feel like it belongs to the people gathered around it.

After all, the most memorable celebrations aren't necessarily the most elaborate. They're the ones where everyone feels at home.

 9. Something Sweet After Dinner

Some of the best summer moments happen after the main meal is finished.

Bring out a bowl of strawberries and cream, a pavlova topped with fresh berries, a fruit tart or a mix of everyone’s favourite sweet treats. Serve smaller desserts in individual bowls and plates or arrange something to share in the centre of the table, then settle back with coffee, tea or a final refreshing drink.

Keep the serving pieces simple with cake plates and mugs and let the cosiness of dusk, twinkly garden lights and tealight candles make the final course feel just as inviting as everything that came before it.

10. The Quiet Summer Evening

Not every summer memory begins with a full table. Sometimes it is simply taking a little more time over something ordinary.

A cup of tea in the garden, dessert shared outside, a simple dinner for two or a final drink after the guests have gone can all become rituals worth savouring. Perhaps it's reading in the last of the evening light or preparing breakfast for someone you love the following morning.

These quieter moments are just as much a part of summer as the celebrations. They remind us that Made with Love is about more than entertaining. It's about the thought we put into everyday things and the people we choose to share them with.

Make the Most of the Moments That Make Summer

ummer doesn't need a packed diary to feel memorable. Often, it's the breakfasts outside, long lunches, spontaneous suppers and slow evenings that stay with us – especially when they're made with a little extra thought.

Whether you're setting the table for a celebration, carrying breakfast into the garden or simply pouring another drink as the evening stretches on, there's joy to be found in making everyday moments feel a little more special.

Because it's not always about what you're serving or how perfectly the table is set. It's the care behind it, the people around it and the memories made along the way.
