Celebrating 20 Years of Sophie Conran for Portmeirion

The Sophie Conran for Portmeirion collection launched in 2006, bringing together Sophie Conran’s passion for food, home and thoughtful design with Portmeirion’s heritage in creating distinctive, practical tableware.

For Sophie, design and cooking have always been closely connected. As the daughter of designer and restaurateur Sir Terence Conran and food writer Caroline Conran, Sophie grew up surrounded by creativity, craftsmanship and a deep appreciation for the home. Her childhood was shaped by both her father’s design studio and her mother’s kitchen and garden, environments where curiosity, creativity and a love of everyday living were part of family life. 

These early experiences helped inspire Sophie’s approach to design: creating pieces that enrich the home and bring people together. Her work has always been rooted in the belief that the objects we use every day should be both beautiful and practical. And together, we shared an ambition to create tableware that felt special enough for occasions, while remaining relaxed, versatile and durable enough for everyday use.

At the heart of the collaboration is a simple idea: beautiful design should be part of everyday life. Inspired by Sophie’s love of cooking, entertaining and time spent around the table, the collection was created for real homes and real moments.  

The collection’s distinctive organic shapes and ripple design were inspired by the character of handmade pottery, pieces which Sophie has always had a love of collecting. The original pieces were hand-thrown by master potter, Kevin, before being replicated, creating the soft, tactile forms and gentle individuality that give the collection its recognisable charm. Every shape was carefully considered; from the way a mug feels in the hand to how pieces sit together on the table. The result is a timeless tableware collection that feels effortless - beautifully designed, yet comfortable and familiar. 

The original White porcelain collection was the start of the 20-year collaboration and remains the foundation of the range. It’s a versatile canvas that works beautifully across everyday dining, entertaining and everything in between.

The enduring appeal of Sophie Conran tableware comes from its ability to fit naturally into the way people live. The collection was never designed to be saved for special occasions. It was created to be used every day, from morning routines and casual meals to gatherings with friends and family.

While the original design philosophy has remained unchanged, our Sophie collections have continued to evolve over the past 20 years, including new shapes, colours and designs.
