6 Self-Care Tips for 2021

If you’re looking to improve your mental wellbeing, our 6 self-care tips will help you to feel more healthy, happy and content.

6 Self-Care Tips to Help You Look After Yourself

With busy schedules, we’re all guilty of putting ‘me time’ at the bottom of our to-do lists. However, constantly putting your needs last can have an impact on your mental wellbeing, leading to a loss of motivation, low mood and even burnout. So whether you schedule in an hour of self-care per week, or try and fit in just ten minutes each morning – you’ll certainly notice a little spring in your step.

Cook a Delicious, Healthy Meal

There’s nothing more comforting than a healthy home-cooked meal. Although it might seem like a mammoth task cooking a meal from scratch – especially when you’re not feeling your best – maintaining a healthy, balanced diet is one of the best ways to boost your wellbeing and make sure you’re feeling like the happiest, healthiest version of yourself. Some of our favourite easy, healthy meals include:

  • Honey garlic salmon, vegetables and rice
  • Chicken stir-fry
  • Loaded sweet potato
  • Chicken/tofu pesto pasta
  • Prawn Thai green curry
So whether you replace your usual mid-week ready meal with a mouth-watering chicken stir-fry, or stop picking at your kids’ leftovers and treat yourself to brain-loving salmon, served on your most elegant plates – you’re sure to feel the benefits of your new healthy diet in no time.

Call a Friend

In these strange times when many of us are unable to spend time with friends and family, it’s no surprise that feelings of loneliness can start to creep upon us. However, texting friends and liking photos on social media doesn’t make up for that face-to-face contact we’re all craving. So next time you find yourself about to text a friend to check in, video call them instead. Just a five minute chat with one of your closest friends is enough to boost your mood and make you feel more connected to those closest to you. Although it might not make up for a gossip over a coffee at your favourite café – it’s still enough to put a smile on your face all day long.

Make Sure You Get Enough Sleep

When it comes to self-care, there’s nothing more important than ensuring you’re getting enough sleep every night. Whether you’re guilty of scrolling through your phone until the early hours, or you simply don’t have a consistent sleep routine – a lack of sleep can have a huge impact on your overall wellbeing. From reduced concentration and productivity, to weight gain and a compromised immune system – a lack of sleep can have a detrimental effect on your health. However, by making sleep a priority and getting between 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night, you can rest assured that you’ll notice a huge difference in your mood, productivity and stamina throughout the day. Some of the best ways to include your sleep quality are:

  • Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day (yes, even at weekends!)
  • Get some exercise during the day
  • Reduce your caffeine intake and switch to decaf 8 hours prior to sleeping
  • Avoid napping mid-afternoon
  • Don’t go to bed too hungry or too full
  • Turn off any screens 30 minutes before bed
  • Make sure the conditions in your bedroom are right (keep it dark, comfortable and not too warm)
By simply altering your evening routine, you’re sure to notice a huge difference in your sleep quality, leading to more productive, happy days.

Get Some Fresh Air

Although it might feel as though you’ve got never-ending chores to carry out in your home, a quick half-hour walk in the fresh air is enough to allow you to escape the everyday, switch off and improve your wellbeing. It’s been proven that spending a little bit of time outdoors in the fresh air every day can have a huge impact on your overall health, including:

  • Improving your mood
  • Reducing stress levels
  • Increasing overall productivity
  • Boosting creativity
So whether you go for a quick walk in-between meetings at work, or start your day early with a mood-boosting walk outside - you’re sure to reap all of the benefits in no time.

Practice Positivity

From looming work deadlines, to misbehaving children – it can be difficult to see the positive side of life sometimes. However, allowing yourself to slip into a negative headspace can have a huge impact on all aspects of your life. From affecting your relationships to reducing your overall mood, a negative mindset can spiral out of control. So next time you feel like negative thoughts are creeping in, take control and turn that negative thought into a positive one. One of the best ways to train yourself to think more positively is to keep a diary, listing three good things that happened each day. From something simple, such as eating your favourite chocolate bar, to ticking off everything from your to-do list – reflecting on the good - rather than the bad - can help to shift you towards a more positive way of thinking.

Start Your Day Right

There’s nothing worse than a mad rush in the morning, trying to get everything done before you log on for work. Not only does it increase stress levels, but a less than ideal morning routine can actually reduce your productivity throughout the day – which isn’t good if you’ve got important deadlines looming! So instead of hitting the snooze button every ten minutes, try to get up as soon as your alarm goes off and allow yourself to have a lovely, relaxing morning before work. Whether you take part in an online yoga class, or simply sit down and relax with a frothy coffee in your favourite mug – a well-structured morning routine is sure to have a positive impact on the rest of your day.

So whether you just make some time to catch up with a friend, or you completely overhaul your evening routine – incorporating some of our self-care tips into your day-to-day life will make a huge improvement to your overall wellbeing.
