Entertaining at home with Portmeirion

Things for couples to do at home:

When thinking of activities to do with your partner, it can be easier to grab your jackets and say “let’s head out to the cinema” or “shall we go out for food?”.

Choosing fun things for a couple to do is hard, but now that staying in is the new going out, a movie night at home can be the answer for a perfect date night activity. For a movie night at home that will ensure you don’t fall
asleep before the credits are finished, try ticking off some of these film night essentials:

1) Make deliciously creamy hot chocolates, and if
you’re looking to super‐size, serve in our Sophie Conran Jumbo cup and saucer.

2) Fill your sofa with soft pillows and blankets to give
it that extra cosy feel.

3) Fill two bowls to the brim with popcorn, to stop
those bickering moments about who has taken
more than their fair share.

4) Use surround sound speakers to create that
cinema‐feel experience.

5) If you’re feeling really adventurous, borrow a
projector and take your film night outdoors. Be
sure to check the weather forecast beforehand though!

Fun things for kids to do at home:

If there’s one thing parents can agree on, entertaining children at home can be extremely difficult, especially when it’s for long periods of time. Whether a child is bored, tired, or uninterested, there’s one thing guaranteed to put a smile back on their face, food!

Thinking of fun things for kids to at home can seem endless, but with kitchen cupboards filled with endless baking possibilities, creating snacks for the whole house is an easy way to keep them entertained, and provide you with a delicious treat for your efforts.
For something surprisingly simple to make that will impress when entertaining guests, have a go at creating buttery Viennese Whirls.

For the biscuits you will need:
‐ 200g of salted butter, softened
‐ 200g of plain flour
‐ 50g of icing sugar
‐ 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
‐ 2 teaspoons of cornflour
‐ ½ teaspoon of baking powder

For the filling:
‐ 100g of softened butter
‐ 170g of icing sugar
‐ 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
‐ 50g of jam (of your choice)

To create them, follow these seven steps:
1) Heat your oven to 180C / gas mark 4, and line a large baking sheet with baking paper.
Mix the butter and icing sugar together in a large bowl with a whisk, until it turns fluffy.
After this, add your vanilla extract and whisk again until it fully mixes in.
2) Over your mixture, sift in your flour, cornflour, and baking powder, and using a spoon, fold in the mixture until it creates a tacky‐like feel. Fill a piping bag with the mixture, ensuring it has a large star‐shaped nozzle at the end.
3) Pipe the mixture into swirl like circles with a 5cm diameter onto your baking sheet. If you need more room, use a second baking sheet.
4) Bake your biscuits for 10‐12 minutes until they are evenly baked and a pale golden shade. After cooling, transfer them onto a wire rack.
5) For the filling, place the softened butter into a mixing bowl and stir in the icing sugar with a wooden spoon initially, then use a whisk to create a fluffy buttercream consistency before adding in the vanilla extract and continuing to mix. Transfer the mixed buttercream into a second piping bag and snip the end off to allow you to pipe.
6) Turn the biscuits onto their back (flat side up) and pipe the buttercream over half of your biscuits. Once finished, spread your chosen jam on to the rest. Take your jam covered biscuits and place them on top of your buttercream ones to create sandwichlike biscuits.
7) There you have it, snacks for the house to tuck into and enjoy together!
