Celebrating a Birthday in lockdown
With the summer months renowned for being the busiest with birthdays, it’s more than likely that a close friend or family member will need to celebrate their birthdays a little differently this year.
Instead of a big birthday party, this year a birthday in lockdown provides the opportunity to do things a little differently, in the best possible way, the Portmeirion way. In this week’s blog post we will be sharing our favourite ways to show how much you care, by creating lockdown birthday occasions to surprise your loved one with.
Birthday brunch at home
Over the last couple of years, one particular mealtime has become a firm‐favourite when celebrating a special occasion. With the endless choices of dishes and the opportunity to include a glass of bubbly, nothing comes close to the beloved brunch. In these somewhat uncertain times where your loved ones may prefer staying indoors than heading to a restaurant, you can bring the fun of the occasion straight into the heart of your home. To create a beautiful birthday brunch at home is super easy and can be done in many spectacular ways. If you’re looking to create a surprise, then a brunch served in bed is the perfect choice. To create that extra special touch, serve on a tray and accessorise with flowers, a little gift, and their favourite drink of choice. There’s simply no better way to be woken up!
If your loved one is more of an early riser, then set the table with our Sara Miller London Portmeirion Chelsea Collection , indoors or al fresco, and spend the morning tucking into warm waffles featuring an abundance of their favourite toppings. If they like to enjoy a little tipple with their brunch, you can’t go wrong with a spicy Bloody Mary, fruity Bellini or classic Mimosa. Delicious drinks for a perfect at‐home birthday brunch.
Afternoon tea at home
If you’re looking to bring a touch of sophistication to a birthday in lockdown, then you can’t go
wrong with an afternoon tea party at home. With afternoon tea at home, the mouth‐watering possibilities are endless! Don’t feel like you need to stick with the classic scones and tea, instead serve the favourite treats of the birthday boy or girl. To keep things simple and elegant, you can always use a big birthday cake as the centrepiece for your at‐home tea party, and build upon with sweet tarts, fresh fruit and savoury sandwiches.
When the food you’re serving is vibrant with colour, use muted tones to accessorise, to allow the
sweet and savoury treats to do the talking. For a white base, use our Sophie Conran for Portmeirion
White collection , which features Sophie’s signature ripple effect on our crisp white porcelain.
To finish, simply pour the tea (or pop the prosecco), add candles to your cake, and enjoy a perfect
lockdown birthday afternoon tea party from the comfort of your home!
Birthday party drinks
A special occasion, especially a birthday in lockdown, calls for special birthday party drinks! With gin becoming more popular than ever it’s the perfect celebratory drink to serve to loved ones (over the age of 18 of course!).
To recreate this classic tipple, simply pair your favourite gin with a splash of tonic, skewer fresh grapes onto a cocktail stick, and add a slice of cucumber and a sprig of rosemary from the garden, then serve in our Auris gin glasses . And there you have it, a perfect birthday party drink which looks incredible but is surprisingly quick and simple to make.
No matter how you choose to celebrate a loved one’s birthday in lockdown, whether it’s a birthday
brunch, afternoon tea party, family dinner or relaxed birthday party drinks at home, it’s guaranteed
to be one for the scrap book!
Wishing a very happy birthday to all those celebrating during lockdown,
